Collections are not only the unique institutional feature of museums, they are also the heart of every museum and thus the starting point for all considerations and activities. Collecting is in the nature of man and is a phenomenon that cannot be completely explained. The reasons for collecting are manifold: financial security in the sense of an investment of value; accumulation out of concern for possible shortages; curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and a “sense of beauty”; the desire for completion, accompanied by the desire to collect or rather to hunt; power, vanity, narcissism and exclusivity; the desire to bring order into the world; documentation and archiving.
